Looking for the Perfect Ring?

Are you planning to get engaged and want the perfect ring?
Here are some important things to know and some key options to choose from:

What metal do you prefer?

9ct or 18ct? Yellow, rose or white gold? Or perhaps Platinum?
Each metal/alloy has it’s own character, qualities and price. As a rule, 18ct gold alloys are softer than 9ct and twice the price. While white gold typically costs more than either yellow or rose gold of the same grade and may need regular rhodium plating to keep its bright white colour. Pure platinum is more resistant to wear than gold and just like gold it does not tarnish. However, while it is similar in price per gram to 9ct gold it also weighs about twice as much and so is a more expensive option.

Precious & Semi-Precious Stones

These days there are any number of precious and semi-precious stones to choose from and even diamonds come with many options. There are numerous cuts (shapes), colours and grades available. Perhaps you favour a single large statement piece stone, or perhaps something more delicate with a cluster of smaller stones? There is often some confusion too between natural Diamonds, Lab grown Diamonds and Moissanites. So to help you make the right choice for your needs, here are some of the more important points to keep in mind for each stone.

Natural Diamonds

These are naturally occurring diamonds, mined from the earth and famous for their durability (hardness) and brilliance. They are most commonly white/clear or opaque, but also occur in various shades of yellow, green, pink, blue and even black. Their price varies vastly depending on their size (weight), cut, colour, clarity and the presence or absence of inclusions (flaws in the stone). A white stone of high clarity and lacking inclusions is far more valuable than one which is cloudy or included. While diamonds with clear, rich colours and few visible inclusions are by far the most highly valued of all.

Lab Grown Diamonds

As the name suggests, these are artificially cultivated diamonds. However, they are identical in every respect to natural diamonds and difficult to tell apart. Lab Diamonds have the same brilliance and durability, while being considerably more affordable, more sustainable and lacking the ethical stigma often associated with natural diamonds. Perhaps the only downside is that they do not keep their value in the same way as natural diamonds.

Moissanites

Natural moissanites are an incredibly rare type of gemstone which do not occur on Earth except for the small quantities introduced by meteorites. However, much like lab grown Diamonds, Moissanites have been artificially cultivated for use in jewellery. They have been produced as a desirable alternative to diamonds, being considerably more affordable than natural diamonds and often lab Diamonds. There are some important differences between them, however. Moissanite has a similar brilliance to diamond, but it is distinctly different in its visual character and an expert can easily identify one from the other by sight. And while it is a very durable stone, scoring 9.25 on the Mohs scale of hardness, Diamond is still the hardest known gemstone with the maximum score of 10.

The Basics of Design

While there is no limit to ring design, there are a few basic features that you can consider to help in planning your ring. The shank itself can be square edged, slight or full D-shape or even knife edged. It can be tapered or it can be uniform thickness all the way around. It is quite popular to wear wedding rings and engagement rings together as a pair of fitted bands, often with one featuring a large stone and the other accentuating it with a row of smaller stones. Stones can be set in claws, crowns, prongs, tubes, channels, tension set, pave set or swiss set directly into the shank. The options are almost limitless, but below are some examples which should help to guide you to the look that you prefer.

Terminology & Design Guide

Finger Sizing

Do you know her specific finger size? It’s always a tricky thing when it’s meant to be a surprise, but it is essential to get this right (after all, you want it to fit on the day!). If she wears a ring on her right ring-finger then you can use that as a guideline; the left ring-finger will typically be one size smaller than the right ring-finger if the person is right handed. See the link for more details;

Heirloom Jewellery

Would you like to incorporate an heirloom jewellery piece into your new ring? We will gladly help. If your gold is the same colour and carat that you would like your ring to be, we can remelt it and reuse it as it is. However, if for example you have an 18ct yellow gold ring and would like your new ring to be 18ct white, there are too options. We can either use brand new gold and give you credit for your old metal. Alternatively, for an extra fee we can have your gold refined and alloyed to the desired colour and purity to make your new piece; this may also be necessary in specific cases where the gold alloy is not suitable for reworking.

Remembrance Jewellery

Over the years we have received several very special commissions to create jewellery that incorporates the ashes of a dearly departed family member. Every one has been a unique design inspired by the memories of the loved one it commemorates.
